Akan Day Names
The Akan people of Ghana frequently name their children after the day of the week they were born and the order in which they were born. These names have spread through West Africa, from Benin/Dahomey (Fon) and Togo (Ewe) to Cote d'Ivoire (Baoule), and throughout the African diaspora. Among the Baoule people of Cote d'Ivoire there is a distinct difference in the assignment of these Akan day names. The Baoule have a calendar which is different from the calendar of other Akan ethnic groups, and their day names are shifted by one day from that of the Akans in Ghana.
